Let’s Hear it For Carpet Protection Film! WOOT WOOT! – 2/23/11
Plastic carpet protection with adhesive is mainly used to shield synthetic carpet during home remodeling and construction. It can also be used for parties, pet visits and other events, but what people don’t realize is the full versatility of the 3mil carpet protection. In this blog, I will provide basic info and give examples of how our customers have used this handy product in non-traditional ways.
This product goes by many “street names” such as carpet protection, shield and film. The adhesive is meant for synthetic carpets only, you do not want to use this on any natural fibers such as wool. If you do use this on natural carpet, your carpet will have the dreadful “pilling”, or when fluffy particles appear on carpet surfaces. Most carpet protection films have an adhesive on one side that allows it to stay in place once it is laid down. Some films will have a glue-based adhesive and others (like ours) have a water-based adhesive. The water-based adhesive means that if a bit of residue is left once the protection is pulled up, it can easily be removed with water.
The carpet protection is meant for temporary use only, and can usually be used up to 45 days before having to be removed. This timeline will vary when the film is exposed to factors such as heat, heavy foot traffic and direct sunlight. Please read this PDF for important information regarding the period of time the carpet protection can be left down in various situations.
A very important thing to check for when ordering carpet protection is whether it is reverse wound or regular wound. This will make a difference in how you roll out the film (which side is sticky). Reverse wound is where the adhesive side is on the outside of the roll, so when you unroll the film, it will stick right to the carpet (adhesive side down). Regular wound is when the adhesive side of the film faces in. Regular wound carpet protection works great for use on carpeted stairs.
Over the years we’ve heard stories from our crafty customers about their non-traditional use of our carpet protection. The film is intended just to use to protect against spills and foot traffic on synthetic carpeted surfaces, but if you do intend to try any of the uses below, please test out on a small inconspicuous area first (and remember the 45 day maximum)!
1) Use in a Recreational Vehicle:
With RV use, there is not much space between the inside and outside world. Try using the carpet protection on your RV’s carpeted walkway or an entire room. Protect your home away from home from unwanted tracked in dirt and mud.
2) Use on Carpeted Car Mats:
This may seem silly, that is the car mats job right? Take a minute to think about how much mud and rain you leave on your mats during just one storm. The carpet protection comes in convenient 24″ x 50′ rolls for easily application on small areas. To remove carpet protection, simply peel back corner.
3) Use to Remove Glass Shards from Carpeting
Last year someone smashed my back window and broke into my car. There wasn’t much to steal, but they did leave a mess. There were glass shards everywhere on my back seat. I took it to the auto body shop to have a new window installed, and inquired about how they remove all of the glass. The technician told me that some pieces are vacuumed up with a Shop Vac and the others are picked up with carpet film. EUREKA! I tested this theory at my home when I broke a glass vase on my carpeted floors. Instead of trying to pick up the large pieces and vacuum up the small (which is very time-consuming and I always cut myself) I unrolled carpet protection in the area. I flattened the carpet protection down with my feet (please wear shoes!) and peeled back the film. To my amazement, almost all of the glass that been picked up. Some large pieces you will have to pick up by hand (wear gloves!). You may want to do this twice to make sure you get all of the glass, and still run a vacuum over to be safe! Below are photos illustrating this concept (I didn’t have any broken glass lying around, so pretend the paperclips, pennies and earing are glass!)
Carpet Protection can be found here on our website in roll sizes 24″ x 50′, 24″ x 200, 36″ x 200′, 36″ x 500′ and 48″ x 500′.
The film is also sold for hardsurfaces such as tile, vinyl, VCT, laminate, marble, granite and factory-finished hardwood floors. YOU CANNOT USE CARPET PROTECTION ON HARDSURFACES OR VISE VERSA!
Protect your floors from Thanksgiving Get Together Traffic – 11/24/11
Happy Thanksgiving!!
Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday when family and friends join for a feast and together time. As the celebration comes to an end and all of your guests leave with arms full of leftovers, they may have forgotten to take one thing with them….. the scratches and scuff marks they left behind. EEEKKKKK!!!!! (well.. maybe I’m being a little over dramatic)
No matter what type of chair, where you got it, or how old it is, inevitably you’ll need some type of furniture feet to protect your floors. Even if you claim you hardly ever use the dinette chair set in the dining room, a little Holiday named “Thanksgiving” comes along and the dinette set becomes the place to be. Protect your flooring from chair legs, so you won’t have to hold your breath every time a guest scooches their chair closer to the table.
The easiest to use chair leg protection I have come across is called a “Clear Sleeve Leg Protector.” It slips right over the chair leg so there is no messy adhesive stickers or screw/nailing to deal with. The slip on part is made of a clear flexible vinyl and the bottom is a heavy-duty brown felt. Each package contains (4) sleeves and is available in 4 sizes 1″ to 1 3/4″ (bottom of the chair leg diameter).

If you are reading this post-Thanksgiving, and scuff marks from shoes, chairs, etc have already appeared, have no fear. There is an easy and non-chemical way to clean and it costs a whooping 2 cents….. pencil erasers. Simply use the pink eraser end of a standard pencil and erase the scuff marks from the floor. If that doesn’t work, try a non-gel toothpaste. Put the toothpaste on the scuff mark and rub it with a toothbrush (unless you like the taste of feet I would recommend using an old one). Rinse it, wipe it down with a soft cloth and let it area dry.
